Situated in the middle of the Chablais, halfway between lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, Morzine-Avoriaz has been built at the confluence of two river Dranses, like a hyphen joining the valley’s two sides. Morzine-Avoriaz surely is a hyphen on numerous levels.
This Haute Savoyard village of 3000 inhabitants has lost nothing of its feeling of bygone times, but has managed to link this to the demands of today’s tourism, in particular with the building of Avoriaz, a 3rd generation resort, at the beginning of the 60’s. It was Jean Vuarnet, born and bred here, who, coming back from the Squaw-Valley Olympic games with the downhill gold medal, suggested converting the village’s abandoned high altitude grazing land…
